From the beginning, Gilliam chose to go beyond the known elements of the storyteller brothers’ lives, disregarding the facts to create an adventure inspired by their smart, scary, and thrilling stories.

In tribute to the richness and the macabre nature of the Grimm legacy, Terry Gilliam also decided to blend action with elements borrowed from the duo’s most popular tales. “‘Little Red Riding Hood,’ ‘Hansel and Gretel,’ ‘Rapunzel’… Throughout the movie, there are multiple references to the tales that the audience knows best,” says the director of “Brazil.” “The Grimms actually wrote over two hundred stories, but we wanted to pay tribute to those that most capture people’s imaginations.”

A major strength of “The Brothers Grimm” is undoubtedly its cast, particularly its leading duo. To play Jacob and Will, Terry Gilliam wanted two actors who could surprise him. “I originally thought Matt would play Jacob, because he has a more introspective and sensitive nature, and that Heath would play Will, as he usually plays the headstrong heroes,” notes the American filmmaker.

“But at our first meeting, Matt said he wanted to play Will. I wasn’t very sure, but then Heath came to me and said he’d like to play Jacob,” continues Gilliam. “That’s when I realized it was the best decision, because I love to cast actors in roles that flip their usual personas upside down.”
