Looking for a great family movie night option? Look no further! This iconic and quirky film was a hit in the 90s, and it’s a legacy that should be passed on!
If you’ve enjoyed Season 2 of “Wednesday” on Netflix, you might want to keep the fun going with your family! If so, “The Addams Family,” the cult classic by Barry Sonnenfeld, is available on the platform and you’re bound to love it!
Recommended for Ages 8 and Up
Released in 1991, the film takes us into the home of cinema’s most macabre family! In their mansion, as spooky as it is cozy, the Addams family lives quietly (especially during the nights). However, Gomez is heartbroken: his brother Fester has been missing for 25 years after a monumental feud worthy of a gothic soap opera.
Meanwhile, Gomez’s financially desperate lawyer, Tully, owes a hefty sum to Abigail Craven, a loan shark as delightful as an angry cactus. When Tully discovers that Gordon, Abigail’s adopted son, bears a striking resemblance to Fester, a twisted idea sprouts: what if Gordon pretended to be the lost brother to infiltrate the family and lay hands on the hidden Addams treasure?
What can I say if you haven’t yet seen this gem of a family comedy with a touch of fantasy? Anjelica Huston, Raúl Julia, Christina Ricci, and Christopher Lloyd deliver truly fabulous performances. The characters are colorful, the absurd situations pile up, and the narrative sweeps us away, much in the vein of Tim Burton’s universe!
It’s worth noting that the renowned filmmaker Tim Burton was initially set to direct the film before Barry Sonnenfeld took over. Burton had worked with the film’s two screenwriters, Caroline Thompson (on “Edward Scissorhands” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas”) and Larry Wilson (on “Beetlejuice”).
Released in 1991 in the United States and 1992 in France, “The Addams Family” was a massive public success. With a budget of $30 million, it shattered expectations by grossing nearly $191.5 million worldwide, including over $113 million in North America alone. And it didn’t go unnoticed in France either: 1.2 million viewers flocked to theaters to catch a glimpse of the delightfully morbid family!
