In 2005, as he was releasing the last installment of his Star Wars prequel trilogy, George Lucas was already hearing about Episode VII.
In 2005, when moviegoers watched “Revenge of the Sith,” the third part of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, which tied back to Episode IV by transitioning Darth Vader to the Dark Side, fans worldwide thought they were witnessing the final chapter of the Skywalker saga. George Lucas thought the same.
“There is No Episode VII”
Indeed, even though he would eventually sell his company, Lucasfilm, to the Walt Disney Company a few years later, the creator of the far, far away galaxy was adamant at the time about not pursuing a potential Episode VII.
“What if someone else, outside of you, came to you saying they wanted to make Episode VII. Could you consider it?” a CBS journalist asked him during the iconic “60 Minutes” show.
“No,” was George Lucas’s terse reply before adding, upon the journalist’s persistence: “There is no Episode VII.”
“Another Spin-off Film”
“Even if someone else imagined it?” the journalist ventured further.
The Star Wars creator then slightly opened the door to the possibility of a completely different story, set in the same galaxy but featuring different heroes.
“Well… There’s a possibility that there could be another film, focused on a spin-off character in this world, but not about Luke Skywalker, not about this group of characters and their battle to restore democracy to the galaxy.”
As it turned out, after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, Luke Skywalker and his companions did make a return to the big screen in Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, complemented by numerous other films and spin-off series in the Star Wars universe.
