What if Forrest Gump had a dark side that no one noticed? Explore how Tom Hanks secretly plays a radically opposite dual role to the hero, and delve into the complex story of Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Many viewers may not realize it, but Tom Hanks actually portrays two characters in Forrest Gump, with the second being the polar opposite of the beloved hero. This character is Nathan Bedford Forrest, a real-life controversial figure.
It’s often overlooked that the actor takes on this dual role. Nathan Bedford Forrest appears in a flashback that explains the origin of Forrest’s name. “[My mother] said we were related to him in some way,” Forrest Gump narrates. This familial connection justifies the narrative choice to have both men portrayed by Tom Hanks. While Forrest is gentle and endearing, Nathan Bedford Forrest embodies the total opposite: a white supremacist and Confederate lieutenant general during the Civil War. He was also a slave trader and became the first “Grand Wizard” of the Ku Klux Klan, a position he held for a year before publicly distancing himself from the group and supporting the cause of African Americans.
Eddy W. Davidson, in Nathan Bedford Forrest: In Search of the Enigma, notes that the general “volunteered to help exterminate the men responsible for the ongoing violence” by the Klan in 1874. These details highlight how Nathan Bedford Forrest is a complex and controversial figure. In the movie, however, he is limited to a 40-second scene, featuring Tom Hanks in Ku Klux Klan attire, hood over his head, juxtaposed with images from D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation (1915). The final line of the flashback, “Mama said that the Forrest part is to remind me that sometimes we all do things that are very good but make no sense,” encapsulates this duality while softening the discomfort of the association.
When Tom Hanks Becomes Forrest’s Shadow
The novel by Winston Groom, published in 1986, devotes several pages to this ancestor and provides more details about the life of Nathan Bedford Forrest. However, for Robert Zemeckis, including all these elements would have diverted the viewer’s attention from the main story of Forrest. Yet, this subtle presence of the second character enriches the narrative depth of the film and showcases Tom Hanks’ talent in portraying two radically different figures.
Despite initial doubts about the project, Forrest Gump is now considered a classic in cinema and won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1995, beating out Pulp Fiction. The film offers a journey through the 1960s and 1970s, marked by encounters with real historical figures, while subtly highlighting the complex legacy of Hanks’ secondary role.
Forrest Gump is available for rewatching on Paramount+ or on VOD.
