Negan, portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, is arguably the most beloved villain among fans of The Walking Dead. First introduced in the chilling seventh season, Negan quickly became a standout character. His evolution was so compelling that the writers gradually transitioned him from villain to a type of antihero, despite the horrific nature of his past crimes.

An Unlikely Duo at the Heart of the Series

Shortly after the original series concluded, Negan was given his own spin-off. He now stars in Dead City alongside Maggie (Lauren Cohan), his arch-nemesis. Their partnership is particularly surprising because Negan killed Maggie’s husband, Glenn, who was also the father of her son Hershel.

Despite her grievances, Maggie finds herself in a position where she must ask her husband’s killer for help. Hershel has been kidnapped by a gang holed up in New York City, led by a former ally of Negan. Given his connections, Negan is her best bet to infiltrate the gang and neutralize this new threat.

A Tribute to a Cult Filmmaker of the 80s

The first season was notably successful, distinguishing itself from the original series by paying homage to 1980s horror films. The series draws heavy inspiration from the work of John Carpenter, particularly his film “Escape from New York,” which also features a mercenary infiltrating a dystopian New York City.

The first season ended with the successful rescue of Hershel. However, to free him, Negan agreed to join the kidnappers. Will Negan revert to his darker instincts, or is this part of a strategy to gain their trust and destroy them from within? Will the true Negan emerge in season 2 of Dead City?

Following the conclusion of the original series, two other spin-offs from The Walking Dead universe were launched. The mini-series “The Ones Who Live” brought back Rick Grimes and Michonne, though a second season is not planned. Meanwhile, the third season of “Daryl Dixon” starring Norman Reedus has already been filmed and will air this year.

Season 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead City airs every Monday exclusively on OCS, available with the myCANAL subscription.
