Portrayed by Norman Reedus, “Daryl Dixon” makes a thrilling return in Season 2 of the horror series spin-off “The Walking Dead”!
A staple character of The Walking Dead, Daryl—the lone wolf played by Norman Reedus—has stepped up as the main hero following Rick Grimes’ departure. His prominence is as much a result of his loyal, steadfast, and brave personality as it is of his massive popularity among fans of the series.
NOT FOUND IN THE COMIC BOOKS
While characters like Rick Grimes, Michonne, Negan, and Alpha originate from the comic books The Walking Dead is based on, Daryl holds a unique position as he does not appear in the graphic novels!
Created specifically for the TV adaptation, Daryl has even managed to become a central figure in the series, to the point where he is now seen as the main protagonist. Robert Kirkman, who is involved in the show’s production, has mentioned in interviews that integrating Daryl into the storyline has been a significant challenge of the adaptation.
HE WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE EARLY ON
It may sound unbelievable, but Daryl was not originally intended to be a central character in the series. Worse, he was supposed to be killed off in the first season! Initially portrayed as a racist and hostile character, he eventually redeemed himself, a transformation that allowed Daryl to win over the hearts of The Walking Dead fans to the extent that the show’s producers now consider him “unkillable.”
HIS SEXUALITY
Daryl’s sexuality has been a topic of discussion for many years. While various romances have involved characters in The Walking Dead over the seasons, Daryl has remained single since the series began. This led many fans to speculate about his sexual orientation.
However, it was finally addressed in one of the special episodes released earlier this year. His relationship with Leah confirmed his heterosexuality, a romance that appears to be more than fleeting since Norman Reedus hinted that the paths of the two characters might intersect again soon.
HE IS THE STAR OF HIS OWN SPIN-OFF
Announced even before the original series concluded, the spin-off Daryl Dixon premiered in October 2023. The first season sees the titular hero venturing far from his companions as his new adventures unfold in France. In a country where he doesn’t speak the language, Daryl encounters new allies and faces deadly new threats.
The second season will mark a significant return to the franchise by his sidekick Carol Peletier. Initially intended to appear in the first season, actress Melissa McBride had to withdraw due to family reasons. However, a solution was found with the production to bring Carol back for this new season!
HE HAS KILLED 89 PEOPLE
It’s impossible to count the total number of zombies killed by Daryl throughout the series—starting with the assumption of at least one zombie per episode, the total would be at least 147. However, specialized sites have managed to count the number of humans Daryl has killed during his adventures: from cannibals to the Whisperers and Negan’s Saviors, he has reportedly killed 89 people, according to experts at ScreenRant, making him the second most lethal character in the series, behind Rick Grimes (63 kills).
Season 2 of Daryl Dixon will be available starting September 30 exclusively on Paramount+, also included in the Canal+ subscription.
