Initially eyed to play the lead in the “Green Lantern” series, Josh Brolin (Thanos from the Marvel saga) ultimately turned down the offer but endorsed the actor who took over the role.
The crossover of stars between Marvel and DC Comics is nothing new, with yet another iconic MCU actor almost making the switch to the rival superhero franchise.
Josh Brolin, widely recognized for his portrayal of Thanos in the Avengers movies, was indeed approached to star as the main character in the Green Lantern series.
During an interview with the niche website ComicBook, the 56-year-old actor shared that “things did not work out,” though he did not delve into specifics. He did, however, give his blessing to his replacement, Kyle Chandler, describing him as “an incredible actor,” and left the door open to future offers from the studio co-led by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).
The Superhero Version of True Detective?
This series marks the second adaptation of the Green Lantern comics, following the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds. Kyle Chandler will take on the role of Hal Jordan and will team up with Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), who has been cast as John Stewart.
Initial details suggest that the show will take on a crime procedural format, reminiscent of True Detective. The two intergalactic superheroes will investigate a mysterious murder deep within the United States. The DC Comics series is being developed by Chris Mundy, the creator of Ozark, and Damon Lindelof (the Watchmen series).
As a reminder, the DC Comics franchise is undergoing a major reboot. A new Superman movie (starring David Corenswet as the lead) was filmed this year by James Gunn, and new actors for Batman, Wonder Woman, and others are currently being sought.
It’s important to note that this shared universe does not include Robert Pattinson’s Batman or Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.
