James Gunn disclosed plans for three “Guardians of the Galaxy” spin-offs while he was still at Marvel Studios, and here’s what they would have entailed…
“Guardians of the Galaxy” was James Gunn’s passion project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He crafted the storyline, directed the trilogy, and turned it into a massive hit. Featuring a stellar cast, the Guardians era became legendary—but it has officially ended.
Now leading the charge at DC, James Gunn is focusing on building Marvel’s biggest rival. Meanwhile, Marvel appears likely to either put the Guardians on hold or completely reimagine them—who knows.
During a recent chat with Josh Horowitz on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast, James Gunn shared an interesting detail: Marvel had planned several spin-offs for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” providing a glimpse into what might have been.
He confirmed that before ending his collaboration with Marvel, three derivative projects of “Guardians of the Galaxy” were envisioned, each one promising. One was a series about the Ravagers, conceived during Yondu’s time, which could have explored the wild adventures of this unconventional crew.
The second project centered on the Guardians’ leader, Star-Lord, titled “Legendary Star-Lord,” with Chris Pratt set to reprise his role. Although Gunn was not involved, he was excited about Marvel expanding on Star-Lord’s stories, even confirming his ongoing friendship with Pratt.
Finally, a “Rocket & Groot” project was also in the works prior to the final film, and James Gunn expressed genuine regret that it didn’t come to fruition. Considering how the last movie delved into Rocket’s backstory, it seems likely that some ideas were incorporated into the film.
Although Gunn’s departure from Marvel Studios might have doomed these spin-offs, there remains a possibility that they could be developed without him, just like other MCU spin-offs. Time will tell.
