Thought you knew everything there was to know about “Titanic”? Think again! Here’s proof with a very, very subtle reference hidden within a seemingly innocuous line.
Even 28 years after its release, Titanic continues to astonish us with its hidden, surprising details! Even if you consider yourself the ultimate fan of James Cameron’s iconic film, it’s likely that you missed this particular reference!
A Subtle Detail
To catch this nod (spotted by the YouTube channel Secrets de cinéma), revisit the scene on the deck of the Titanic, about 47 minutes into the movie, where Jack is having a casual conversation with Rose, played by Kate Winslet. She thanks him for his help when she nearly jumped overboard, and also for keeping the incident quiet.
Feeling guilty, she then utters this meaningful line: “I know what you must think. Poor little rich girl, what does she know about misery?” What’s interesting about this line is the phrase “poor little rich girl.” It’s a very subtle homage to a work featuring Gloria Stuart, the actress who portrays the older Rose.
Indeed, Poor Little Rich Girl is the title of a 1936 musical comedy directed by Irving Cummings. Shirley Temple played the lead role, while Gloria Stuart, who was 26 at the time, played the character Margaret Allen.
A Classic from the ’30s
The movie tells the story of Barbara, a girl shielded and spoiled with thousands of toys and animals by her wealthy, widowed father. Yet, she feels bored and unfulfilled. Sent by her father to a school in New York, she gets lost in the big city one day.
She is taken in by Tony, an organ player accompanied by a monkey, and a couple of singer-dancers: she then pretends to be a poor little orphan. Joining their simple lives, she discovers true freedom…
James Cameron thus wove this subtle meta-reference into Titanic, adding an unexpected layer of depth to a line that might otherwise seem trivial. Considering that Rose’s character later becomes an actress, it’s plausible to think that within the reality of the film, she actually played the role of Margaret in Poor Little Rich Girl, thereby coming full circle.
