Bryan Cranston’s Unexpected Encounter with a Legendary Director 52 Years Ago!

While still in college, the star of “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Breaking Bad” had a fleeting encounter with Alfred Hitchcock, a moment he still vividly recalls to this day.

Currently starring in the four-episode continuation of the beloved family comedy on Disney+, “Malcolm: Nothing’s Changed,” and also renowned for his stellar role as Walter White in “Breaking Bad,” Bryan Cranston is widely regarded as one of the television industry’s biggest names.

Cranston Meets Hitchcock

Decades ago, at the age of 18, before he had started his acting career and was contemplating a future in law enforcement, Bryan Cranston briefly crossed paths with a legend of a completely different caliber. For just a few seconds, he encountered Alfred Hitchcock, the iconic director known for “Psycho,” “The Birds,” “North by Northwest,” and “Vertigo.”

As he recently shared with Vulture, the brief meeting took place in Hollywood at the DGA Awards. Cranston was part of the security team for the event but was stationed at the back door, which was used by those avoiding the red carpet:

“I was told that celebrities would come in, present or hand out an award, and then exit out the back, get in their cars, and leave. Suddenly, a car pulls up, and out steps Alfred Hitchcock. I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s Alfred Hitchcock.’ He walked heavily towards the back door (…) and I knew I just had to greet him.”

“Good evening, Mr. Hitchcock. Did you enjoy your evening?”

Bryan Cranston made sure he was in the right place when the famed filmmaker would exit the ceremony.

“As soon as I saw the driver return (…), I positioned myself by the door, somewhat stealthily. And when the door opened, Mr. Hitchcock came out, and before the driver could reach the car door, I opened it for Mr. Hitchcock and said: ‘Good evening, Mr. Hitchcock. Did you enjoy your evening?’ He replied with something I’ll never forget. He said, ‘Ahhhh!'”

Apparently annoyed by young Bryan Cranston’s initiative, Alfred Hitchcock simply grumbled in response to the future star of “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Breaking Bad.” Would he have reacted differently had he known the career that awaited his brief interlocutor? That remains a matter for speculation.
