The film is a remake of an earlier version also directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1934 while he was still in England. David O. Selznick had already considered it back in 1940 when he had Hitchcock under contract.

“The Man Who Knew Too Much” won an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Que Sera, Sera”. Doris Day, who performed the song in the film, was a singer before becoming an actress. She appeared in several musicals including “Young Man with a Horn” (1950, Michael Curtiz) and “The Pajama Game” (1957, George Abbott and Stanley Donen).

For the scene where Daniel Gélin’s makeup smears onto James Stewart’s hands, the makeup artists could not find a black foundation that would easily transfer. They instead painted James Stewart’s fingers white so they would leave marks on his co-star’s face.
