At the 79th Cannes Film Festival, John Travolta showcased his directorial debut “Night Flight to Los Angeles” and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Palme d’Or by Thierry Frémaux.
The 79th Cannes Film Festival was abuzz with John Travolta’s return, 32 years after Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” took the prestigious Palme d’Or. Travolta came to introduce his first film as a director, “Night Flight to Los Angeles,” which is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on May 29.
On Friday, May 15, the actor ascended the festival’s famed steps for the screening of Guillaume Canet’s film “Karma,” starring Marion Cotillard. Shortly thereafter, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Palme d’Or by the festival’s general delegate, Thierry Frémaux.
This was the last thing I expected.
“You said tonight would be special, but I never imagined this,” a surprised and emotional Travolta told Frémaux. “It’s beyond an Oscar. This was the last thing I expected.“
Beyond “Pulp Fiction,” Travolta has left a significant mark on American cinema since the 1970s, starting with his first major film role in Brian De Palma’s “Carrie.” He rose to international fame two years later with the blockbuster musical “Grease,” alongside Olivia Newton-John.
He also starred in “Saturday Night Fever” and later collaborated again with Brian De Palma in the acclaimed thriller “Blow Out.” After a period of lesser visibility, Travolta regained prominence in the 1990s following the success of “Pulp Fiction.”
What is his first film about?
Travolta’s directorial debut is based on his own childhood experiences on an airplane. It adapts his 1997 children’s book into a film.
Here’s the synopsis of “Night Flight to Los Angeles”: “In the golden age of aviation, Jeff, a young boy passionate about aeronautics, takes a one-way flight to Hollywood with his mother, crossing the United States. What could have been just another flight turns into the journey of a lifetime. From meals served on board, the attention of flight attendants, unexpected layovers, colorful fellow passengers, and a memorable stint in first class, the adventure offers magical and surprising moments that will forever shape the young boy’s destiny.“
