Ryan Coogler’s Total 180 on X-Files Reboot May Shock Fans!

It’s been months in the discussion, but it’s finally a wrap! The shooting of the X-Files reboot pilot by Ryan Coogler has just concluded earlier this month. And it’s fair to say that everything happening behind the scenes of this series is a drama in itself.

A Bold Choice

First off, the series hasn’t even been greenlit by Hulu yet! Only the pilot has been ordered, hence written and directed by Ryan Coogler. Even more intriguing, the pilot was reportedly shot in 65 mm by his cinematographer from Sinners, Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who won an Oscar for that film, according to World of Reel.

It’s quite unusual for a TV series to be shot in 65 mm, and it’s assumed that the subsequent episodes – if ordered – might not have this luxury. The only other series shot in 65 mm is the third season of Euphoria. Its creator, Sam Levinson, switched between 35 mm and 65 mm.

Possibly a Movie?

Here’s where it gets even more fascinating: the two-hour pilot might be adapted into a feature film. At least, that’s what Ryan Coogler has proposed to Disney (the parent company of Hulu) to consider. The studio has yet to make a decision, especially since the series as a whole hasn’t been approved. Coogler, a staunch advocate for the cinematic experience, seems to have suggested releasing this project in theaters, either in a limited or a broader manner.

Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel play the two FBI agents, accomplished yet with clashing personalities, who succeed Mulder and Scully. They are forced to collaborate when assigned to a long-dormant division specializing in mysterious and unexplained cases.

With the resounding success of Sinners, which was a milestone in his career, Ryan Coogler can pretty much do as he pleases. Now that X-Files is wrapped up, he plans to shoot Black Panther 3 next year. The film’s release is rumored to be set for the summer of 2028.
