Ralph Fiennes Thought His Career Was Over 28 Years Ago After Accepting This ‘Flop’ Role!

Ralph Fiennes is among those British actors whose extensive and prestigious body of work is quite impressive. Brought into the limelight by his chilling performance as Amon Goeth in Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List,” he quickly became a prominent figure in international cinema.

With three Oscar nominations for “Schindler’s List,” “The English Patient,” and more recently “Conclave,” he has built a solid and respected career. Fiennes has also starred in “The Constant Gardener,” played the role of M in the latest James Bond films, and portrayed the fearsome Voldemort in the Harry Potter series.

A Distinguished Career with Some Missteps

Despite his impressive career trajectory, Ralph Fiennes admits that not all his choices have been wise. Like many actors, he has been involved in projects that did not pan out well and have left a mark on his career.

The most notable example remains the 1998 film adaptation of “The Avengers” with Uma Thurman and Sean Connery. The film was poorly received by audiences, garnering a 1.5 out of 5 stars on AlloCiné, and was also a significant commercial failure.

Looking back, Fiennes does not hesitate to describe this film as a particularly painful failure. In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, as he reflected on the 25th anniversary of “The End of the Affair” alongside Julianne Moore, he discussed this challenging period.

He shared that he had gone through a period of professional instability: “I had just gone through a period of ups and downs,” he recounted.

“The Worst of the Worst”: A Bitter Memory

Regarding “The Avengers,” Ralph Fiennes did not mince words and described the project as a complete disaster: “I had starred in this huge flop, The Avengers, which was the worst of the worst. They didn’t even have a premiere. They didn’t even organize a screening. They just told me, ‘Release it, and don’t look back.’ And so I was literally thinking, as you do when you experience these kinds of moments: ‘Oh, my career is over.’”

The film, in addition to its negative reviews, was a resounding public failure and was even nominated for nine Razzie Awards, including one for Fiennes himself.

A Swift Rebound Thanks to a Redemptive Role

Fortunately for him, this rough patch didn’t last long. Ralph Fiennes quickly found a project that was more in line with his talent, notably through Neil Jordan’s film alongside Julianne Moore. He described this experience as a positive turning point: “It was a fantastic antidote to the anxiety I was feeling after ‘The Avengers.’”

This successful comeback with “The End of the Affair” allowed him to turn the page and continue a career that, despite some missteps, remains one of the most respected of his generation today.
