In “Ocean’s Twelve,” several scenes stand out, but one in particular owes a lot to Vincent Cassel’s involvement. The French actor did more than just perform his role; he helped design a sequence that became iconic, requiring significant physical exertion.

Upon reading the script in 2004, Cassel envisioned a different approach for the famous laser scene. A long-time practitioner of capoeira, he believed this Brazilian martial art would add a more spectacular dimension to the scene.

A Personal Idea That Captivated Steven Soderbergh

To persuade the director, Cassel showed him several combat videos and clips produced by the Kourtrajmé collective. He also suggested using a track from the group La Caution to enhance the scene. Charmed by these ideas, Steven Soderbergh embraced all of his suggestions.

Even more surprisingly, the filmmaker gave him complete freedom to prepare the sequence. Despite the high cost of renting the museum location, he essentially handed him, in the actor’s words, “the keys to the truck.”

Rediscover the scene below:

An Exhausting Day of Filming

Cassel could start rehearsals early in the morning with a small team, and by the afternoon, Steven Soderbergh and the rest of the technical crew would join to shoot the action scene.

Despite regular training and meticulous preparation, the actor is not a professional stuntman. The day involved jumping, rolling, dancing, and performing numerous complex moves, making it particularly challenging.

By the end of this sequence, the actor, already accustomed to physically demanding roles, such as in “Brotherhood of the Wolf,” was completely spent. He admitted, “If I had been asked to do another day like this, I wouldn’t have been able to!

A Rewarding Effort Onscreen

Despite the grueling experience, the outcome remains one of the most memorable moments of “Ocean’s Twelve.” This performance did not deter Cassel, who continued to leverage his physical prowess in demanding roles in films like “Jason Bourne” and “The Emperor of Paris.”

“Ocean’s Twelve” is available to stream on Canal+ and HBO Max.
