Friends & Buffy Step Aside: This ’90s Cult Classic Series is Getting a Sequel After 30 Years!

Originally created by writer and director Amy Heckerling, the Clueless series was a hit among teenagers in the late 1990s. Based on the film of the same name also directed by Heckerling, this colorful and feel-good universe where Beverly Hills teens struggle to find the perfect boyfriend caught the eye of the Paramount+ platform, which decided it was time to give Cher, Dionne, and all the others a new series.

What is the new series about?

Years after the original series, Cher Horowitz, the much-adored Beverly Hills icon, has succeeded in many areas: she is a successful businesswoman and a fulfilled mother. That is until her daughter starts high school, and she finds herself completely lost in dealing with what she once was: a teenager.

A Stellar Team

This new series will thus be a legacyquel, a belated sequel to a franchise in which the original characters make a comeback to pass the torch to a new generation of heroes (like Star Wars 7, Scream 5, etc.). Actress Alicia Silverstone will make her grand return in the role of Cher, but it’s still unknown if other original actors will also participate. The same goes for the new characters, who have not yet been cast.

On the script side, Josh Schwartz, the creator of cult series like Gossip Girl and The O.C., has been appointed as the showrunner alongside his longtime partner Stéphanie Savage. Also noteworthy is the involvement of screenwriter Jordan Weiss, creator of Dollface and who recently penned the script for Freaky Friday 2.

The new Clueless series is expected to begin filming in 2027.
