In the early 2000s, Christopher Nolan wasn’t yet the blockbuster filmmaker we know today. However, the critical success of his second feature film, Memento, had already caught the attention of major studios.

At that time, Warner Bros. was setting up a grand adaptation of The Iliad. The screenplay for Troy was in progress, but no director had been selected yet. The studio considered Nolan for the task of bringing this mythological epic to life.

Eventually, the project shifted hands. Warner opted to hand it over to Wolfgang Petersen, a seasoned director known for his affinity for grand adventures, evidenced by his work on Das Boot and The NeverEnding Story.

Batman Begins, an Unexpected Compensation

Reflecting on the twentieth anniversary of Batman Begins, screenwriter David S. Goyer discussed this surprising turn of events in the June 2025 episode of the podcast Happy Sad Confused. According to him, the film dedicated to the Dark Knight somehow allowed Nolan to rebound after losing Troy.

“The irony is that Batman appeared to be a consolation prize for Chris, as he was developing Troy. Then Troy was taken away and given to Wolfgang Petersen, while it seems Petersen was developing Batman vs Superman, I think they must have swapped.“

This decision ultimately had major ramifications for Nolan’s career. Released in 2005, Batman Begins enabled him to revive Gotham’s hero and lay the groundwork for a trilogy that would become iconic.

Nolan Finally Enters Homer’s World

More than two decades after his involvement with Troy, Christopher Nolan finally ventured into Greek mythology with The Odyssey. Homer’s tale takes place after the events of the Iliad, following Odysseus’ challenging return to Ithaca, where his wife Penelope awaits. A journey that would last ten years, filled with trials and legendary encounters, from the Cyclops to the sorceress Circe.

This return to antiquity follows a long tradition of productions inspired by this period, from Gladiator to Alexander, including the series Rome and Spartacus, as well as films like Agora by Alejandro Amenábar and The Return, Ulysses’ Return by Uberto Pasolini.

The filmmaker had even named Gladiator II, the epic by Ridley Scott, as his favorite film of 2024. One can only imagine what the Trojan War would have looked like had it been interpreted by Christopher Nolan back in 2004.

Troy, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, is currently available for streaming on HBO Max, as well as for rent or purchase on various VOD platforms. As for The Odyssey by Christopher Nolan, the film is still showing in your nearest cinema. Rediscover its trailer below.
