Christopher Nolan’s iconic film “Memento” significantly boosted the career of its lead actor, Guy Pearce. However, in a recent interview with The Times, the actor harshly criticized his own performance…
Let’s take a quick flashback. In an interview with Vanity Fair last December, Guy Pearce revealed that despite the success of “Memento,” he was prevented from working again with Christopher Nolan. He blamed a Warner executive who strongly opposed it.
“He [NDR: Nolan] talked to me about roles over the years. The first Batman and The Prestige. But there was a Warner Bros executive who openly told my agent: ‘I don’t get Guy Pearce. I will never understand Guy Pearce. I will never hire Guy Pearce.’ So, in a way, that was good to know. Okay! After all, there are actors I struggle with too. But it also meant that I could never work with Chris again. I guess he didn’t believe in me as an actor.”
“I Think I’m Terrible”
The actor is clearly going through some deep self-reflection, as he further criticized his performance in “Memento” in the pages of The Times this time (via Variety). “I hate what I did, I think I’m terrible,” he admitted, after having recently rewatched “Memento.” Wow.
“I’m having an existential crisis. I watched ‘Memento’ the other day, and I’m still depressed. I’m terrible in that movie. I had never thought that before, but I attended a Q&A session about the film earlier this month, and decided to watch it again. But during the screening, I realized I hated what I had done.
And so all those stories about a Warner executive explaining why I haven’t worked with Chris since? It all fell apart. I know why I haven’t worked with Chris again – it’s because I’m not good in ‘Memento’.”
Guy Pearce is certainly entitled to feel this way about his performance in Nolan’s film. However, it’s not necessary for everyone to agree with this rather bleak view of his work. Hopefully, he doesn’t feel the same way about his role in the brilliant “Ravenous”…
