Blockbuster Director Returns After 9 Years with New Sci-Fi Film!

Nine years after the release of “A Cure for Life,” Gore Verbinski is finally making a comeback to the big screen, as evidenced by the trailer for the anticipated 2026 sci-fi movie “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.”

It’s not that we had given up hope, but it was almost getting to that point. Every time there was a whisper about a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, fans would shed a tear wondering what had become of Gore Verbinski, the director of the first three installments of the adventure saga. His expertise played a significant role in the critical and commercial success of the films starring Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, and Orlando Bloom from 2003 to 2007.

Indeed, stepping away from Captain Jack Sparrow’s adventures, Verbinski faced less fortune: his film “The Lone Ranger,” seen as a Western twist on Pirates of the Caribbean, failed to climb to the expected box office heights, and the failure of the horror flick “A Cure for Life” seemed to have sidelined him in an industry more focused on franchises than filmmakers. That is, until the exciting news of his return after a nine-year hiatus was confirmed by a trailer.

As if one piece of good news wasn’t enough, “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die” (that’s the title) is based on an original screenplay and is a sci-fi film, which undoubtedly gave Verbinski some solace after his aborted project to adapt the video game Bioshock, which fell through due to budget issues and a studio made cautious by the box office failure of Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen.”

But don’t expect steampunk or art deco vibes here. Instead, imagine a mix of present and future where a man dressed in what he claims is the height of fashion from his era arrives at a diner to recruit patrons to fight against an artificial intelligence that threatens the world in the near to medium term. It’s as if “Terminator” met the series “Future Man,” with an actor of Sam Rockwell’s caliber to help nurture the ensemble’s wild side.

No Release Date for France Yet

It’s safe to say that the film promises to be a wild ride, in line with the “Have Fun” part of the title, repeated several times in this enticing trailer, which hints at a more modest (yet likely no less skilled) endeavor from Gore Verbinski. The cast also includes Michael Pena, Zazie Beetz, Juno Temple, and Haley Lu Richardson, notably seen in season 2 of “The White Lotus.”

Scheduled for a February 13, 2026 release in American theaters, just three months away, “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die” does not yet have a release date in France. But after seeing these images, one can only hope that a date is determined soon and that the film’s passage through the country doesn’t solely hinge on its success in the United States.
