Jérôme Commandeur is back with “T’as pas changé,” a comedy he directs and stars in about a group of friends reuniting years later. This film, perfect for a nostalgic night out with friends, guarantees laughter!
What’s It About?
Following the disappearance of a classmate, four former high school friends decide to reunite their whole class for a party 30 years after graduation, reminiscent of their old school days.
A true homage to the 90s, “T’as pas changé” offers a hilarious and biting portrayal of these fifty-somethings whose lives are forever changed by the reunion…
The 90s nostalgia is more alive than ever, as seen recently with the release of the Culte 2Be3 series. In “T’as pas changé,” Jérôme Commandeur invites us to experience or relive the 90s: the comedy is set in the present but brings back the 90s through flashbacks and numerous references.
Though the reunited friends are in their fifties (Laurent Lafitte, François Damiens, Vanessa Paradis), Commandeur aims to speak to all generations. This film is crafted for enjoyment among friends or family, or both. Beneath the jokes, “T’as pas changé” prompts us to reflect on our friendships, the passage of time, and the fear of aging.
No one planned on getting older
“At 50, we start talking a lot about time passing. It feels like life is speeding up, like water draining from a bathtub: slow at first, then it accelerates and suddenly everything is gone. When I look at my sons, I feel like I’m their age, except I’m thirty years older. That’s something Jérôme captured well in the film: no one planned on getting older,” explains François Damiens, one of the friends.
The success of this comedy lies in its finely crafted script, and humor that’s sharp but never mocking, filled with the kind of witty lines that are Commandeur’s trademark. “Kevin Knepper (co-writer of ‘T’as pas changé’) and I simply wrote the film we wanted to see. The division of labor went like this: he built the structure of the film, integrated the twists and the various progressions, and I handled the dialogues. That’s why I like to say he did the heavy lifting (masonry-plumbing-electricity) and I did the decorating,” explains Jérôme Commandeur.
“As he’s nostalgic, he has a very referenced sense of humor, and it’s the precision of these references that I particularly like. No one else is as precise. He can bring up names of people, objects, or shows that we haven’t heard for 30 years and they immediately trigger something in you,” sums up Laurent Lafitte.
A Playlist of Real and Fictitious Hits!
“T’as pas changé” features an excellent musical playlist, composed of real hits from the era (including Hanson’s “mmmbop,” which Vanessa Paradis enjoys singing off-key!)
“Reflecting the film’s 90s references, I wanted a playlist that was precise yet steered clear of the ‘obvious’ hits. I was thrilled to include ‘MmmBop’ by Hanson and have it alongside ‘La fête est finie’ by Orelsan or ‘C’est beau la vie’ by Isabelle Aubret. It creates a vibrant but beloved patchwork,” details Jérôme Commandeur.
As for the character played by Laurent Lafitte, who resembles a French Ricky Martin, the songs he performs are purely fictional creations for the film. They were composed by Pol-Serge Kakon, father of Varda Kakon, the music supervisor for “T’as pas changé.” “This artist, who started in the cabarets of the 50s, who rubbed shoulders with Barbara and Brassens, created for us a piece with Latin sounds of the late 90s that is both simple and precise. I love when Vanessa’s character tells Laurent, ‘I used to watch you on Hit Machine on Saturday mornings on M6, while I was studying for my medical exams at the university residence.’ It says it all!”
“T’as pas changé” is the third feature film written and directed by Jérôme Commandeur following “Ma famille t’adore déjà” (2016) and “Irréductible” (2022).
The film hits theaters this Wednesday, November 5.
