Following the success of the “Minecraft” movie and the “Fallout” series, Xbox is set to adapt another one of its beloved video games for the screen, much to the delight of pirate fans.
While fans are still waiting for a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie (to the extent that a fan made an unofficial sequel that’s strikingly realistic!), pirate enthusiasts can find solace in the adaptation of the video game Sea of Thieves.
A Marvel Director at the Helm of Production
In a detailed article by Entertainment Weekly dedicated to Xbox, it was revealed that among the future Hollywood adaptations of the company’s iconic games is a live-action Sea of Thieves movie.
Released in 2018, this action-adventure game developed by Rare allows players to become pirates who embark on voyages for various trading companies aboard their ships, all within an open world where gamers can meet, form alliances, or engage in direct combat.
While little is known about the adaptation currently in development at Xbox, it is confirmed that it will be produced by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to release on July 29. However, no director or screenwriter is yet attached to the project, but the game features a rich universe gradually described through playable “Tales,” which could provide nearly ready-made material for future creators.
Xbox’s Hollywood Ambitions
What is certain is that Xbox intends to capitalize on the successes of Minecraft, whose sequel is slated for release next year in theaters, and Fallout, which has just added actors from Breaking Bad and Star Wars for its third season, by continuing to adapt its iconic licenses for both the big and small screens.
In addition to the Sea of Thieves project, a Gears of War movie is in development at Netflix, while a Wolfenstein series is expected to debut on Amazon. In total, about a dozen adaptations are planned, though most are still being kept under wraps. More developments are expected.
