If you’re a fan of thrillers and crime dramas, we highly recommend this overlooked gem from the 90s on Netflix! You won’t regret it!
Released in 1998, “The Negotiator” stands as one of the most thrilling movies of that magical decade, which brought us many unforgettable films in the genre! This time, it’s the clash between Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey that elevates this major work of the 90’s crime drama.
A Forgotten 90’s Crime Drama
Directed by F. Gary Gray, “The Negotiator” doesn’t give the audience a moment’s rest! Viewers are plunged into a night in Chicago, where police helicopters tirelessly circle the skies. The gang unit, the FBI, and the media are all on high alert.
On the 20th floor of a building, Danny Roman, played by Samuel L. Jackson, holds Terence Niebaum, the head of internal affairs, Commander Frost, an informant, and a secretary at gunpoint. However, Danny Roman is anything but a criminal.
A seasoned police officer, he is considered the best negotiator in Chicago. Yet, he finds himself accused of a heinous crime. Made a scapegoat of a terrifying conspiracy, he is desperate to clear his name, and Niebaum refuses to come clean. To fight back against the conspiracy orchestrated by some of his colleagues, Roman demands an external negotiator he doesn’t know, a certain Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey).
With feverish dramatic intensity, “The Negotiator” will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish! Based on a true story, the film features several twists and turns, smart direction, and memorable supporting roles from actors like David Morse, J.T. Walsh, and Ron Rifkin.
A Memorable Showdown
And of course, there is the riveting showdown between the two main characters: the hostage-taker and the negotiator, portrayed by a perfectly cast duo: Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. At the time, both actors were at the peak of their careers—Jackson with films like “Pulp Fiction,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” and “Jackie Brown,” and Spacey with “The Usual Suspects,” “Se7en,” and “American Beauty.”
Produced on a budget of $50 million, “The Negotiator” unfortunately was a commercial failure, earning only $44 million worldwide upon its theatrical release; however, it received generally favorable reviews from critics. It later found a second life on television and in video rental stores.
It’s worth noting that “The Negotiator” is part of a wave of crime dramas that prominently featured corrupt police officers, a popular theme in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Other films like “Cop Land,” “Training Day,” “Dark Blue,” and “Narc,” to name a few, fall into this trend.
