In 1982, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, and Ralph Macchio were all auditioning together for “Outsiders”. Francis Ford Coppola has released footage from this historic casting, long before they became famous.
Francis Ford Coppola opened a real time capsule in February 2024. To celebrate the anniversary of “Outsiders”, which was released in 1983, the director posted several videos shot during the film’s auditions.
The footage features very young actors, most of whom had not yet experienced fame. Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, and Diane Lane are seen in these precious archives, unaware of the stellar careers that lay ahead of them.
A Group Audition Orchestrated by Coppola
Instead of meeting with candidates individually, Francis Ford Coppola chose to bring them together on a single set. The roles were then passed around among the participants, who were invited to perform various characters in front of their competitors.
The filmmaker explained the unique nature of this selection process in his Instagram post: “Forty-two years ago, we auditioned for Outsiders in a unique way. We had all the actors together on a movie set and took turns having different actors read for different roles.“
By directly confronting the young actors, this method could have easily created a tense atmosphere. Instead, it fostered a genuine camaraderie within the group.
“It was interesting because everyone was watching their competition, so even though it could have been a volatile situation, it turned into a very positive one. A natural respect and sense of camaraderie emerged among them. The result worked wonderfully and reminded me of my time as a camp counselor.“
Characters Far from Being Finalized
These videos also reveal the various options considered by the director before making his final casting decisions. Anthony Michael Hall, for instance, was seen auditioning for the role of Ponyboy, the lead character ultimately played by C. Thomas Howell.
Moved by these images more than four decades after their shooting, the ultimate interpreter of the character commented under Coppola’s post: “The people who came to these auditions… many went on to have wonderful careers. Incredible.“
Ralph Macchio, who became globally famous thanks to “Karate Kid” (1984) before reprising his character Daniel LaRusso in the series “Cobra Kai” (2018-2025), also reflected on the importance of this experience in his career: “These auditions and this cinematic experience still shape me today.“
Rob Lowe also nostalgically recalled his memories: “It feels like it was just yesterday!“
The Cradle of a Generation of Stars
Adapted from the novel by S.E. Hinton, “Outsiders” takes us to 1966 in a small Oklahoma town divided by deep social rivalry. On one side are the Greasers, teenagers from modest families; on the other, the Socs, privileged youths from affluent neighborhoods.
The story focuses particularly on Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell), his brothers Sodapop (Rob Lowe) and Darrel (Patrick Swayze), and their friend Johnny (Ralph Macchio). When a violent clash between the two gangs ends tragically, Ponyboy and Johnny have no choice but to flee.
Beyond its storyline, “Outsiders” remains associated with the emergence of an extraordinary generation of actors. What was once just a group of young auditionees gathered in a room soon formed one of the most iconic film casts of 1980s American cinema.
The film is now available for rent or purchase on VOD.
