Earning a lot of money often leads to the desire for even more. Film stars, for example, typically don’t build wealth by rejecting lucrative offers, which makes Patrick Swayze’s mentality at the height of his fame all the more extraordinary.
By the late 1980s, few stars had his magnetic appeal. The charismatic actor from Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Road House, and Point Break was a hot commodity, inundated with high-level commercial offers. However, he set a firm rule for himself.
At that time, he told the Los Angeles Times (via FarOut Magazine): “They want me to launch a perfume and call it ‘Patrick’. I’ve been offered a fortune to make fitness videos, posters, all sorts of stuff – around $10 million. It’s madness. I won’t do any of that.“
A Promise Challenging to Maintain Over Time
However, research indicates that this strict policy wasn’t always adhered to. As his popularity waned and major roles became scarce, Patrick Swayze eventually took on some commercial opportunities.
In 2004, he signed a contract with Orange. Interestingly, Orange was originally a British telecommunications company that became a subsidiary of France Télécom in 2000. Today, Orange no longer exists as a mobile brand in the UK.
During this period, Patrick Swayze had only two real cinematic hits in a decade: the 1995 comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and Donnie Darko in 2001. He also acted in Hallmark TV movies and struggled with personal issues, including alcoholism.
He passed away in 2009, leaving behind a notable filmography and a legacy that reminds us that sometimes, money isn’t everything.
