Explore this forgotten post-apocalyptic feature film starring Patrick Swayze, heavily inspired by the Mad Max series.
In 1985, the United States saw the release of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the third installment featuring the adventurer in his desert and post-apocalyptic world directed by George Miller and George Ogilvie. This inspired storyboard artist Doug Lefler to conceive a feature film titled Steel Dawn.
A Mad Max Spin-off
Steel Dawn, also known in France as The Last Fighter or The Elite Warrior, is set in a desert world where water has become a scarce resource worth fighting for. A warrior known as Nomad (Patrick Swayze) witnesses his mentor’s murder. On a quest for revenge, he encounters a small group of settlers who have established themselves around a water source. Their well draws the attention of the fearsome Sho (Christopher Neame), who turns out to be the assassin Nomad is seeking.
The “Madmaxian” imagery is all there, albeit on a tighter budget. Characters wear leather and improvised outfits, the vehicles are customized (sail carts replace muscle cars), and of course, there is a battle over the precious resource of water.
Far from us to judge the film directed by Lance Hool (Missing in Action 2), as it is quite watchable.
It Works (Through a Child’s Eyes)
It may appeal more to children than adults, who might spot some of the tricks in the fight scenes and stunts, but Steel Dawn manages to create its own imagery, clearly modeled after Mad Max, yet still enjoyable to watch. Everything is predictable, but sometimes the best stews are made in old pots, and the film has that kind of charm.
If there’s another inspiration to highlight in Steel Dawn, it’s the western Shane, as it features the archetype of the lone adventurer who helps a woman and her child solve a problem through violence, before he departs, ideally at sunset.
The same year Steel Dawn was released, Patrick Swayze starred in Dirty Dancing, which would become one of his biggest hits, unlike his post-apocalyptic film, which was a commercial flop. It’s also worth noting that before Steel Dawn, he had starred in Red Dawn, another action film, though the two titles are unrelated.
