Patrick Swayze Regretted This Cult Role: The Story Behind His Reluctant Sequel Return

When reflecting on the late Patrick Swayze, one film instantly comes to mind: Dirty Dancing. Along with Ghost and Point Break (which will be adapted into a series), it’s likely one of his most iconic film roles. While many viewers hold this musical romance as sacrosanct, the same can’t be said for its sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which most of us have forgotten. However, Patrick Swayze indeed makes a surprising cameo in it!

Patrick Swayze’s Candid Take on the Dirty Dancing 2 Flop

It took seventeen years before the world of Dirty Dancing returned to the screen. In 2004, a sequel directed by Guy Ferland (The Night Agent) and featuring an entirely new cast made a quiet debut in theaters. The story shifts to Cuba and follows Katey (Romola Garai), an 18-year-old American who moves to Havana in ’58 with her family just before the Cuban revolution. She falls for Javier (Diego Luna), a young waiter and talented dancer, and secretly joins him in a prestigious dance contest.

Rumor has it, Patrick Swayze turned down a fortune to star in the sequel! In an interview with The Standard, the actor, who passed away in 2009, didn’t mince words: “I refused! I knew from the start it was rubbish.” His frank admission is surprising, given what follows…

Yet the Actor Makes an Appearance in the Sequel

Despite his initial reluctance, Patrick Swayze does appear in Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. He doesn’t reprise his role as Johnny Castle, but instead plays a dance instructor. In a brief scene, the American actor teaches the heroine some Cuban dance steps, a fact captured on film!

Although it was a minor role, Swayze’s participation was indeed real. Despite his expressed reservations about the sequel, he still made a brief return to the world of Dirty Dancing. Unfortunately, this appearance didn’t help the film achieve the same level of success as Emile Ardolino’s original, which starred Jennifer Grey as Baby.
