Despite an average rating of 3.2 out of 5, this dark thriller showcases one of Guillaume Canet’s finest performances, masterful as a methodical and tormented killer.
A Film That Went Under the Radar
Released in 2014, Cédric Anger’s “Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart” didn’t quite receive the recognition it deserved. With an average rating of 3.2 out of 5 from 4,478 reviews on AlloCiné, the film has divided audiences. While some criticize its clinical detachment and lack of psychological depth, others praise its oppressive atmosphere and relentless approach to the real-life events it’s based on.
Moving away from traditional crime thrillers to adopt an almost hypnotic direction, the film offers a disturbing dive into the mind of a killer. At the heart of this chilling work is Guillaume Canet in one of the most daring roles of his career.
Guillaume Canet, Remarkably Restrained and Intense
Portraying Franck Neuhart, a fictional counterpart to Alain Lamare, a psychopathic gendarme who terrorized the Oise region in the late 1970s, Canet delivers a performance of rare intensity. Far from the more approachable roles that have marked his success, he portrays a taciturn character, methodical and consumed by suffocating internal violence.
Choosing not to overplay the emotional aspect enhances the film’s tension. Every look, every clumsy gesture, every moment of solitude speaks volumes about Neuhart’s inner turmoil. The actor’s strength lies in this subtlety, embodying the chilling banality of evil with terrifying accuracy.
A Crime Thriller That Breaks the Mold
Unlike more traditional French crime thrillers, “Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart” shuns overt dramatic effects. Cédric Anger’s cold, minimalist direction is reminiscent of David Fincher’s approach in “Zodiac,” focusing on meticulous observation over action-packed excess.
Rather than attempting to explain the motivations of its protagonist, the film focuses on his actions, his rituals, his isolation. The bleak lighting by Thomas Hardmeier adds to this suffocating immersion. This raw realism, combined with a lack of psychological justification, may be unsettling, but it is precisely what makes the film stand out.
A Film Worthy of Reevaluation
If the overall rating of the film remains modest, it may be because “Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart” is a work that neither seeks to charm nor reassure. It disturbs, and that’s what makes it an effective thriller.
Guillaume Canet finds himself in a role that deviates from the more charismatic or likable characters he has previously played. His full commitment to this role deserves acknowledgment, and the film itself deserves to be rediscovered.
“Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart” is available until March 14th on Netflix.
