Does the Iconic Ranch from Yellowstone Really Exist? Find Out Now!

Western series are making a big comeback, largely due to the success of Yellowstone. The series has brought Kevin Costner back into the spotlight and centers on a family clan managing a vast ranch in Montana, USA.

To defend against rivals and real estate developers, the patriarch, John Dutton, does not shy away from using extreme measures to ensure the prosperity of his estate.

A massive hit in the United States, the series also has a large following in France. While many series are inspired by real events, one might wonder if Yellowstone is also based on a true story? The answer is no, the show isn’t adapted from a true story, but several elements within the series are indeed inspired by real-life events.

A Childhood Dream Turned Reality

The ranch that lends its name to the Yellowstone series is actually inspired by a real ranch near where Taylor Sheridan (the show’s creator) grew up, not in Montana but in Texas. Founded in 1900, this ranch is known as Four Sixes or 6666, covering an area of 1,416 square meters! Interestingly, Taylor Sheridan now owns it.

During his childhood in Texas, Sheridan lived near the ranch, which was managed by the Burnett family who specialized in breeding and selling competition horses. The Burnetts’ personality and their determination to maintain the prosperity of their estate at all costs were a significant source of inspiration for the character of John Dutton, as well as his ancestors in the spin-offs 1883 and 1923.

In the spring of 2021, a group of investors led by Taylor Sheridan purchased the ranch following the death of its owner, Anne Burnett Marion, for $347.7 million. To complete the deal, Sheridan invested all $200 million he earned from renewing his contract with Paramount Global.

Beyond sentimental reasons, this investment could pay off quickly. The 6666 ranch appeared in the fourth season of Yellowstone and will soon be featured in its own spin-off. The location has also become a favored filming site for all of Taylor Sheridan’s projects, whether related to Yellowstone or not!
