It’s arguably one of the most shared images on the Internet, and almost no one knows its origin! Let’s delve into a phenomenon that inadvertently turned a legendary actor into a social media icon.
Even if you’re not a movie buff and the world of cinema doesn’t interest you, you’ve likely come across this image on social media. It depicts a bearded man seemingly looking at someone in the distance. The camera zooms in on him as he subtly nods his head in a “yes” gesture, signaling approval.
An Iconic Internet Meme
This image has become what is known as a meme, a type of viral video that spreads like wildfire across all social media platforms. Millions have used it in everyday situations, without ever knowing where it came from. The general public suspected it was from a movie, but which one?
For many years, numerous internet users even believed the man in the meme was comedian Zack Galifianakis from The Hangover. This is not the case at all! The man is actually Robert Redford, and the scene is from the classic film Jeremiah Johnson, directed by Sydney Pollack in 1972.
Robert Redford, A Social Media Star
Upon the actor’s death last September, the image went viral again, and the public realized its true origin. This created quite a shockwave! For all these years, Robert Redford was a social media star, and almost no one knew it, especially not the man himself.
You can find this meme in “gif” format and share it on social media by searching for “Nodding Meme Guy”. We’ve all definitely used it in a humorous context to express our agreement with someone.
The meme originates from the movie Jeremiah Johnson, which marked the second collaboration between the legendary Robert Redford and director Sydney Pollack. In total, they would create six feature films together.
Redford plays the titular Jeremiah Johnson, a veteran of the Mexican-American War. He lives reclusively, escaping the violence of civilized society in the Rocky Mountains. Faced with an unfamiliar environment, he must also contend with a Native American uprising. Determined to seek revenge, he too resorts to violence.
The famous short clip is from the beginning of the film; Johnson lives alongside a Native American woman and her child, going about his daily life in this beautiful natural setting. And if you’ve never seen this classic from the 70s, don’t hesitate to get it on DVD, Blu-ray, or VOD—you won’t regret it!
