Sci-Fi’s Newest Star is the Daughter of a Cult Series Hero – Guess Who?

At 28, Sydney Chandler is the breakout star of the new Disney+ series “Alien: Earth.” However, she’s not just emerging from obscurity—she’s the daughter of Kyle Chandler, the unforgettable Coach Taylor from “Friday Night Lights.”

Sydney Chandler is making waves with “Alien: Earth,” but she grew up away from the spotlight, despite her father, Kyle Chandler’s, prominent presence on our screens. Kyle Chandler left his mark on American television portraying Coach Eric Taylor in the groundbreaking teen drama series “Friday Night Lights” from 2006 to 2011. He also starred in “Bloodline,” “Catch-22,” and appeared in films like “Manchester by the Sea.”

Born on February 13, 1996, and raised near Austin, Texas, Sydney spent much of her life out of the public eye. Unlike many celebrity offspring, she didn’t immediately seek to capitalize on her family’s fame.

Early Roles That Made an Impact

Sydney Chandler’s acting debut came in 2016 with a minor role in the indie comedy “The Golden Rut,” followed by an appearance in “SKAM Austin” in 2019. Her breakout year, however, was 2022 with three projects that introduced her to a broader audience.

She first appeared in the mini-series “Pistol,” directed by Danny Boyle, where she portrayed a young Chrissie Hynde, the iconic lead singer of The Pretenders. Her performance was well-received and showcased her acting prowess in a demanding biographical role. That same year, she landed a role in “Don’t Worry Darling,” directed by Olivia Wilde, alongside Florence Pugh and Harry Styles.

A Rapidly Rising Career

By 2024, Sydney confirmed her rising star status with “Sugar” on Apple TV+, opposite Colin Farrell. She plays Olivia Siegel, the missing granddaughter of a Hollywood producer whom Farrell’s private detective character is tasked with finding. This darker role set the stage for her casting in “Alien: Earth.”

In “Alien: Earth,” Sydney Chandler takes on a challenging role as Wendy, a hybrid, meaning the first synthetic being with a human consciousness—specifically that of a 12-year-old girl.

This complex character aims to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Ellen Ripley, portrayed by Sigourney Weaver, a tall order for the 28-year-old actress who seems to have inherited her father’s natural charisma.

“Alien: Earth” is available on Disney+ since August 13.
