Laurent Laffite has chosen an intriguing tale for his directorial debut in the world of film. A former resident of the Comédie-Française and a well-known face in French cinema, Laffite stepped behind the camera for the first time in 2020 to direct “L’Origine du monde.”
This dark, satirical comedy, adapted from Sébastien Thiéry’s play of the same name, centers on a man in his forties from Paris. He suddenly realizes that his heart has stopped beating, yet he continues to live as if nothing has changed.
Capturing His Own Origin of the World
After seeking advice from his best friend Michel, a veterinarian, Jean-Louis consults a guru who believes she can cure him. However, she requires a photograph of his “origin of the world.” Jean-Louis then persuades Michel to woo his mother in order to take the necessary photo.
This story has long captivated the actor-turned-director, Laurent Laffite, who didn’t consider any other story for his debut film: “This story has lived in me so deeply, I’ve dreamed about it so much that I didn’t want to write anything else for my first film.”
Initially, Laffite wanted to play the role of Michel, as he found it to be the funniest character in the story. However, after some thought, the role was given to Vincent Macaigne, while Laffite took on the leading role of Jean-Louis: “I would have played a very different Michel, and certainly less funny than Vincent Macaigne. I quickly dropped the idea and chose to be the straight man.”
Changes in the Film Adaptation
The role of Jean-Louis’s wife was expanded for the film adaptation, crafted specifically for Karine Viard, who delivers one of the finest performances of her career. To break away from the theatrical norms, Laffite also added several outdoor scenes to enhance the underlying social aspects of the story.
L’Origine du monde by Laurent Laffite will be leaving Netflix’s catalog starting September 14th.
