In Guillaume Nicloux’s latest film, Sandrine Kiberlain stars as “Sarah Bernhardt, the Divine,” hitting theaters this Wednesday. The film portrays an internationally acclaimed actress who is passionate, independent, and modern.
What’s the Story?
Paris, 1896. Sarah Bernhardt is at the pinnacle of her fame. An icon of her time and the world’s first global star, Bernhardt is also a figure of love, freedom, and modernity, challenging societal norms. Explore the woman behind the myth.
Sandrine Kiberlain becomes Sarah Bernhardt! This Wednesday, December 18, she leads the cast in the feature film titled Sarah Bernhardt, the Divine. Directed by Guillaume Nicloux and written by Nathalie Leuthreau, the film delves into 30 years in the life of this extraordinary artist.
“Like many, I had only a vague idea of who Sarah Bernhardt was. People would say she was ‘the first global star’, ‘a sacred monster’, that ‘people fainted when she performed’. She had a kind of absolute greatness…”, explains Sandrine Kiberlain.
A wild and boundless energy
“But then, with Guillaume Nicloux, we visited an exhibition dedicated to her in Paris. That’s where I truly grasped not only the scope of her artistic achievements but also her role as a committed and incredibly free woman.
“When I first read the script, I loved how Nathalie Leuthreau portrayed her life without making it a typical biopic. It doesn’t talk about her childhood. It’s really about 30 years of a woman already successful, already defined by her relentless energy where everyone follows her lead, where she disregards societal expectations. Her only limits are her own…”
Sandrine Kiberlain’s Previous Role as a Renowned Artistic Figure
Sandrine Kiberlain once again portrays a celebrated figure from the arts. In the film Violette, directed by Martin Provost and released a decade ago, she stepped into the role of writer Simone de Beauvoir, acting alongside Emmanuelle Devos who played Violette Leduc.
The cast of Sarah Bernhardt, the Divine also includes Laurent Lafitte as Lucien Guitry, Amira Casar as Louise Abéma (Bernhardt’s painter best friend), Pauline Etienne, Laurent Stocker, and Sébastien Pouderoux, all from the Comédie-Française.
Sarah Bernhardt, the Divine debuts in cinemas this Wednesday, December 18.
