GOP Pushes for $27 Billion Trump Golden Dome Amid Cuts to Working-Class Safety Net!

$27 Billion for a “Golden Defense Dome” While Proposing Cuts to Medicaid, Urges Vote in 2026

“$27 billion for a golden defense dome, yet Republicans want to cut Medicaid,” a commentator pointed out, urging a prudent vote in 2026.

As the Republican-led Congress advances a broad tax and budget proposal, significant reductions to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are on the table. Concurrently, the GOP aims to incorporate a defense initiative into this legislation, earmarking an initial $27 billion for the so-called Golden Dome, a priority for U.S. President Donald, as reported by Reuters on Thursday.

President Trump has expressed his ambition for an “Iron Dome for America,” referring to the protective system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile shield, which he has dubbed the “Golden Dome.”

According to experts consulted by NPR, constructing America’s Golden Dome would present more challenges than those faced by Israel’s Iron Dome. Dylan Spaulding, a senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, earlier this week dismissed the Golden Dome concept as a “complete fantasy.”

As per a document and a congressional aide cited by Reuters, the $27 billion is part of a larger $150 billion defense package that Republicans intend to introduce. “This will be included in Trump’s comprehensive tax cuts bill, which proposes to reduce taxes by about $5 trillion and is projected to add approximately $5.7 trillion to the federal government’s debt over the next decade,” the publication noted. The proposed bill would also allocate funds for building 14 warships and boost homeland security expenditures.

“The $27 billion investment in the Golden Dome will finance the construction of additional missile interceptors and the acquisition of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile systems,” a congressional aide disclosed. THAAD systems are manufactured by defense contractor Lockheed Martin, as reported by Reuters.

Recent reports from the same outlet highlighted that billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX, along with two other partners, are poised to secure a significant component of the Golden Dome project tasked with missile tracking.

Bob Peterson, a senior research fellow for strategic deterrence at the conservative Heritage Foundation, praised the initiative. Sharing reports from Reuters, Peterson commented on Friday, “This is a crucial beginning for the construction of the Golden Dome. I truly hope it is approved so that missile defense can safeguard all Americans against our foes.”

However, the planned expenditure has not been universally welcomed.

A social media user expressed dismay, saying: “Golden Dome missile defense shield? WTF. $27 billion for a golden defense dome, yet Republicans want to cut Medicaid and Social Security. Vote accordingly in 2026.”

“Over 180 companies have shown interest, but notably, Musk’s SpaceX appears to be the ‘front-runner’ for the contracts,” stated Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas), responding to earlier reports from Reuters on Musk’s likely involvement. “End this corrupt deal. No cuts to Medicaid and Social Security to fund more Musk contracts.”
