Harrison Ford Almost Lost Yellowstone 1923 Lead on Netflix – Here’s Why!

Harrison Ford might have missed out on the lead role in “1923” had he not placed his complete trust in the series creator, Taylor Sheridan.

At 82, Harrison Ford remains one of Hollywood’s living legends. Known for his iconic roles in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones sagas, he has recently ventured into the Marvel universe with the release of “Captain America: Brave New World,” which is currently showing in theaters.

In recent years, Harrison Ford has also become one of the most sought-after American actors on television. He currently stars in the leading role in two ongoing shows: “Shrinking” on AppleTV+, and “1923,” a prequel to “Yellowstone.” In this spinoff, he plays Jacob Dutton, a distant relative of John Dutton (portrayed by Kevin Costner).

For many, his casting in a Western series seems like a natural fit. Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the series, has even admitted that he wrote “1923” specifically with Harrison Ford in mind. However, Ford had to agree to join the series without having the opportunity to read the scripts first.

Taylor Sheridan’s Approach

Typically, the scriptwriting process precedes casting. An actor of Harrison Ford’s caliber is usually given scripts to read and then decides whether to take part in the project. Taylor Sheridan, however, flipped this process because he prefers to know for whom he is writing his series.

“He asked if he could read the script, and I told him he could once it was written, but it hadn’t been written yet and he needed to commit now because I need to know for whom I am writing. I’m tired of writing blindly, trying to find the right person only to find out they are unavailable because they are already shooting a Netflix series,” Taylor Sheridan explained to Deadline.

The screenwriter even posed an ultimatum to Harrison Ford: “Are you going to do this, or are you going to watch Chris Cooper land the biggest role of his career?” Once Ford agreed, Sheridan applied the same method with the equally legendary Helen Mirren.

Neither of them had any regrets about this blind casting. In the same interview, Taylor Sheridan shared Harrison Ford’s reaction after finally reading the season 1 scripts: “He called me to say they were perfect, and asked when filming would start.”

The first season of “1923” can be found on Netflix.
