When will the “1923,” the second prequel to “Yellowstone,” be available on Netflix?
A third “Yellowstone” series has made its way to Netflix. In March, the streaming giant launched the first four seasons of the Western series starring Kevin Costner, along with its mini-prequel, “1883.” Both programs have been a massive hit, consistently ranking in Netflix’s top 10 most-watched series for several weeks in a row.
It has been announced that the second prequel to “Yellowstone,” titled “1923,” will be available on the platform starting in July. Initially, only the first season will be released. The series features Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), the brother of James Dutton who was the protagonist of “1883” but does not appear in this new installment.
Yellowstone’s Future Was Already at Risk in 1923
Without any children, the aging man prepares to ensure a succession plan by handing over the reins of the ranch to his nephews. However, an attack by rivals results in the death of John Dutton (seen as a child in the mini-series “1883”) and leaves Jacob seriously injured.
His wife, Cara (Helen Mirren), then writes to their youngest nephew, Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), urging him to join them in Montana as soon as possible, since he is living in Africa. But in 1923, such a journey required significant time and was fraught with deadly dangers along the way.
The Most Expensive Yellowstone Series
“1923” is one of the most expensive series ever produced, with a budget of about $30 million per episode. This staggering cost is partly due to the hefty salaries of its stars—$1 million per episode for both Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren—but also because of its filming across natural settings in several African countries.
The release of “1923” on Netflix today means that the “Yellowstone” franchise is nearly fully assembled on the platform. The only pieces missing are the latest season of the main series and the second season of “1923,” which aired earlier this year; both are now exclusively available on Paramount+.
