Netflix has decided to cancel its Western series “Territory,” initially hyped as the platform’s answer to “Yellowstone.”
Attempting to replicate the success of Yellowstone doesn’t necessarily guarantee a hit. This is the lesson Netflix learned with the failure of its neo-western, Territory. Set in the Australian outback and featuring Anna Torv (Mindhunter), the series has been abruptly dropped by the streaming service.
Territory depicted a family that owned the world’s largest ranch. The death of the eldest son thrusts patriarch Colin Lawson into the precarious position of finding a new heir. Meanwhile, competing developers are desperately trying to snatch up the land…
This cancellation is a significant setback for a series that was envisioned to span multiple seasons. While a renewal seemed imminent, logistical issues were ultimately cited by Netflix as the reason for the unexpected termination. The show will remain unfinished, despite a plot twist that ended the first season…
Another Western Series Finds Success on Netflix
Que Min Luu, Netflix’s programming head for Oceanic territories, released a brief statement confirming the end of Territory: “We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to have worked with the incredible cast and production team to bring Territory and the breathtaking landscapes of the Australian outback to millions of households around the world.”
Although Netflix could not turn Territory into its own Yellowstone, the platform has already identified its successor. The success of the Western series “At the Dawn of America” has prompted the streaming service to greenlight several more seasons, even though it was originally planned as a one-season miniseries.
Additionally, Netflix will start streaming the first four seasons of Yellowstone, as well as the prequel 1883 (available March 12), from March 1st. This move will introduce Kevin Costner’s series to a brand-new audience and might pave the way for future Western series.
The first season of Territory is currently available exclusively on Netflix.
