When he’s not busy with “Yellowstone” and its various spin-offs, screenwriter Taylor Sheridan is crafting other hit series that stand apart from his Western saga.
Taylor Sheridan is synonymous with Yellowstone, but his creative work extends far beyond this Western series. Originally an actor, Sheridan transitioned to screenwriting, first making a mark in Hollywood with films like Sicario and Hell or High Water, and later directing Wind River.
Since 2018, Sheridan has continued his screenwriting career on television. Yellowstone’s success has spawned two prequels, 1883 and 1923, and four more spin-offs are on the horizon: The Madison, 1944, Y: Marshals, and a new series focusing on Rip and Beth.
A Screenwriter Who Collaborates With Big Names
Sheridan keeps busy, typically writing or co-writing every episode of his series and directing some. Yet, he also works on other successful series unrelated to the Yellowstone universe, such as Tulsa King starring Sylvester Stallone.
In this series, Stallone plays a New York mobster sent by his clan to the remote U.S. where he decides to build his own criminal empire as a form of revenge, inevitably drawing the ire of local mobsters. After two successful seasons, the third has begun production and is expected to air by the end of the year.
Oscar-winning actress Zoe Saldana also stars in Lioness: Special Operations, which features Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman. This show follows an elite female unit tasked with dismantling terrorist networks.
In a more crime-focused series, Mayor of Kingstown stars Jeremy Renner as a mediator who works to maintain peace between local gangs and the police. Three seasons have already been released, and a fourth has been officially ordered.
Heading to Texas for Taylor Sheridan’s Latest Hit Series
More recently, the first season of Landman has been a major hit. Set in the world of Texas oil companies, it features Billy Bob Thornton as a cynical old cowboy. The second season is currently being filmed, and further seasons are likely to follow.
Lastly, the Western anthology Lawmen, which focused on the life of the first Black marshal, Bass Reeves, in its first season, was initially meant to be a Yellowstone spin-off before being developed into a standalone series. Unfortunately, it is unclear if a second season will be produced or which Western figure it might explore next.
All of Taylor Sheridan’s series, whether linked to Yellowstone or not, are available now on Paramount+.
