Presenting a Different Harrison Ford

Among his notable collaborations, his work with Harrison Ford stands out. In films like Witness (1985) and The Mosquito Coast (1986), Peter Weir provided Ford with roles that were more complex and substantial than his typical action-hero personas. Ford has even stated that The Mosquito Coast is his favorite film from his extensive career.

“I would do a sequel in a heartbeat,” Ford remarked to the L.A. Times.

A Gradual Retreat from the Film Scene

Despite his successes, Peter Weir has not directed a film since The Way Back (2010), a poignant drama about escaping Soviet prisoners. This prolonged absence has raised numerous questions. Actor Ethan Hawke, who worked with Weir early in his career on Dead Poets Society, has suggested a surprising theory: according to him, Weir grew tired of the tensions with certain difficult actors, such as Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe.

In a 2022 interview with IndieWire, Hawke stated, “I think he lost all interest in cinema. He really loved the craft when he didn’t have actors causing him trouble. Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp broke him. He’s such a rarity these days, a popular artist. He makes mainstream films that are artistic. To get the budget for films like The Truman Show or Master & Commander, you need a Jim Carrey or a Russell Crowe. I think Harrison Ford and Gérard Depardieu were his kind of actors. They were supportive of directors and didn’t see themselves as above the film.”

Russell Crowe played the lead in Master & Commander, while Johnny Depp was slated to star in an adaptation of Shantaram that Peter Weir was preparing before leaving the project due to creative differences. The film never materialized.

The Director’s Perspective

In response to these claims, Peter Weir clarified his position in a 2022 interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. “That quote from Ethan must have been taken out of context. I find it confusing,” he stated.

Regarding his future behind the camera, he added philosophically, “For film directors, as for volcanoes, there are three major phases: active, dormant, and extinct. I believe I’ve reached the second! A new generation is here, shouting ‘action’ and ‘cut,’ and I wish them all the best.”

Finally, at a recent tribute at the French Cinematheque, he gave a more direct answer: “Why did I stop making films? Simply because I ran out of energy.”

Without an official announcement or a grand final project, Peter Weir seems to have quietly retired, leaving behind a powerful, demanding, and deeply human body of work. If he never returns, his legacy will certainly endure.
