What began as a childhood dream turned into an extraordinary journey of discovery. Guided by a faded, hand-drawn map sketched decades earlier, one man unearthed a treasure that had been hidden since the dark days of World War II.
A legacy buried at the brink of war
In the early 1940s, as World War II engulfed Eastern Europe, the Glazewski family of Poland faced an impossible choice. Fearing the advance of Russian troops, they decided to bury their valuables near their estate, hoping to preserve what little they could of their heritage. They fled, never to return.
For more than 80 years, the location of that hidden cache remained a family secret, remembered only in stories and fragments of memory.
The map that spanned generations
Fast forward to today: Jan Glazewski, 69 years old, set out to find what his ancestors left behind. His father, relying only on recollection, had sketched a crude map from memory 50 years after their escape. It showed the outline of their old manor, destroyed long ago, and gave hints of the treasure’s resting place at the edge of a forest near what is now Lviv, Ukraine.
Armed with this map and a metal detector, Jan followed his father’s directions across fields reclaimed by nature until he reached the spot.
Unearthing the past
There, buried in the soil, he uncovered a box of jewels and family heirlooms—items once belonging to his late mother, who had died when he was only seven years old.
“Touching the objects my mother packed away 80 years ago was incredibly moving,” Jan said. “It wasn’t just about finding treasure—it was about fulfilling my father’s wish. It gave me pride, confidence, and a sense of closure.”
Among the finds were gold jewelry, a silver baptism spoon, and personal artifacts, now valued at thousands of dollars. But for Jan, their worth lies in memory, not money. He hopes to display some of the pieces to honor his family’s resilience and keep their story alive.
More than treasure
For Jan, the discovery was about far more than jewels. It was about reconnecting with his roots, honoring his parents’ sacrifices, and closing a chapter of history left open for generations.
In following his father’s hand-drawn map, he not only found a box of family heirlooms—he found a bridge between past and present, a tangible reminder of how even in times of war, hope and legacy can survive beneath the soil, waiting to be uncovered.
