Heat 2 Drops After 30 Years: Heat 3 Already in the Works!

It took thirty years between the release of Michael Mann’s masterpiece, Heat, featuring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer in 1995, and its sequel. Yet, even before “Heat 2” has started filming, thoughts are already turning towards a third film.

Once deemed an impossible project, “Heat 2” is now set to proceed with Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Stephen Graham announced in the cast, while Adam Driver is reportedly in talks to join them. Based on the novel co-authored by Michael Mann, the film is scheduled to begin shooting this November in locations including Los Angeles, Chicago, Paraguay, and Singapore.

“Heat 2” delves into the early life of Neil McCauley, his time in prison, and the background of his accomplice Chris Shiherlis. The novel also explores the past of Vincent Hanna, the detective chasing them across Los Angeles, and his life following the events of the original movie.

Anticipated Success?

According to The Wrap, Amazon MGM is quite optimistic about the commercial potential of the feature film. The studio is eyeing a global box office of $500 million, and discussions about a “Heat 3” have already begun, aiming to further expand the universe created by Michael Mann. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer believes that “Heat 2” could achieve success similar to his recently produced F1 movie.

A Project That Nearly Didn’t Happen

However, developing “Heat 2” was not without its challenges. Michael Mann submitted an initial script to Warner Bros. in March 2025, but the studio, chilled by several commercial failures, was only willing to finance the movie up to $125 million—far short of the filmmaker’s ambitions.

The project then moved between Paramount and Sony before both studios eventually withdrew. It was finally picked up by Amazon MGM following a script rewrite and significant filming incentives in California, bringing the budget to approximately $165 million.

No official release date has been set for “Heat 2,” though a 2028 debut in cinemas seems likely. One thing is certain: if the film meets expectations, fans of Neil McCauley and Vincent Hanna won’t have to wait another thirty years to see more of the Heat universe on the big screen.
