Powered by an in-form Jim Carrey, “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” is a delightful adventure that we highly recommend for a family movie night, especially if you have a Netflix subscription.
Following the tragic and mysterious fire that destroyed their home and took their parents’ lives, the three Baudelaire children have become orphans. As heirs to a vast fortune, which they can only access when they come of age, they are placed under the questionable guardianship of Count Olaf, a flamboyant and villainous character with a flair for theater, who is, unfortunately, one of their distant relatives.
Determined to claim the inheritance for himself, Olaf must contend with the children’s cleverness. Violette, aged 14, is an exceptional inventor. Her brother Klaus, 12, is an avid reader. Their little sister Sunny has the ability to bite and chew nearly anything she encounters.
A Side of Jim Carrey You May Not Know
When discussing Jim Carrey’s career, classics like The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, or The Truman Show usually come to mind first. And rightly so, as these are timeless classics. However, it would be a mistake to overlook some of the other gems that this chameleon-like actor has brought to life. A Stellar Cast
Based on a series of children’s books by Lemony Snicket, this film, which even some of Jim Carrey’s biggest fans may have missed, showcases one of his finest performances. As eccentric and unhinged as ever, Carrey perfectly embodies the grim and hilarious Count Olaf, adopting various disguises as his outlandish character demands.
Jim Carrey is undoubtedly a major highlight of the film, but he’s far from the only one. Set in a mysterious and almost Burtonesque atmosphere, the movie directed by Brad Silberling also features the brilliant Meryl Streep, the excellent Jude Law, a hilarious Timothy Spall, and an impressive original score by Thomas Newman.
