It’s July 20, 1994, in the United States. Following the success of “Falling Down,” Joel Schumacher returns to the director’s chair with a gripping crime thriller: “The Client.” Featuring seasoned actors Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon, the film notably unveils an 11-year-old actor: Brad Renfro.

A Remarkable Debut Role

The young man portrays Mark Sway, who, along with his younger brother Ricky, witnesses the dramatic suicide of a corrupt lawyer, Jerome “Romey” Clifford. Moments before his death, Clifford confides a dreadful secret to Mark.

He knows the location of the buried body of Senator Boyette, who was secretly murdered by the hitman Barry “The Butcher” Muldano (Anthony LaPaglia), the nephew of the powerful mob boss Johnny Sulari (Ron Dean). Fearing elimination, Clifford chooses death over revenge from the mob.

Unwillingly thrust into a deadly situation, Mark becomes a target of both the FBI and the mafia. Harassed, terrified but resolute to survive, he turns to a lawyer with a troubled past, Regina “Reggie” Love (Susan Sarandon), who agrees to defend him for a symbolic dollar. Soon, the case escalates to a national level.

Attorney General Roy Foltrigg, referred to as “the Reverend” (Tommy Lee Jones), known for sprinkling his speeches with biblical verses, sees this case as a chance to shine in the spotlight. Amidst manipulations, pressures, and threats, young Mark finds himself caught in a merciless duel between law enforcement and organized crime.

At that time, Brad Renfro beat out Macaulay Culkin, star of “Home Alone,” who was also vying for the role of Mark. However, John Grisham, the author of the original novel, preferred the director to cast a newcomer rather than a recognized Hollywood face. Thanks to casting director Mali Finn, Brad Renfro landed his first movie role, and it was a significant one!

A Meteoric Rise

His magnetic presence and raw, instinctive acting quickly catapulted the young actor into the spotlight. Two years later, he stood out again in a dark, twilight film, “Sleepers” by Barry Levinson, portraying Michael Sullivan, a boy sexually abused by his guardians in a correctional facility. This adult character was later played by Brad Pitt.

Brad Renfro delivered an outstanding performance in a challenging role, adding a poignant and melancholic depth to this powerful character. For the actor, it was also an opportunity to act alongside a titan of cinema: Robert De Niro. At just 14, he was already ranked among the most promising actors of his generation.

In 1998, he confirmed his status as a future star by landing the lead role in “Apt Pupil,” another film by Bryan Singer, the director of “The Usual Suspects.” Brad Renfro played a troubled teenager who discovers that his neighbor, portrayed by Ian McKellen, is a former Nazi war criminal. A strange and unhealthy relationship ensues between the young man and the elderly man.

A Downward Spiral

This role further solidified Brad Renfro’s popularity, but unfortunately, he began to struggle with drug addiction. At the age of 15, he was arrested by the police along with his cousin, in possession of cocaine and cannabis packets. Subsequently, by the age of 18, he had already undergone several stints in rehab.

Later, after being arrested for heroin possession, a photo of him handcuffed made the front page of the Los Angeles Times. He was also arrested for drunk driving and attempting to steal a yacht in Florida.

Due to his addictions and escapades, he struggled to secure roles as impactful as those in his early career. However, he did appear in “Ghost World,” an iconoclastic film with a young Scarlett Johansson, released in 2002 in France.

He also stood out in “Bully,” directed by Larry Clark, where he played Marty, a teenager tormented by a group of youths. Marty, particularly bullied by the violent Bobby (Nick Stahl), sees no escape from his tortured life other than the murder of his tormentor. The vulnerability emanating from this character resonates with Brad Renfro’s own journey, making the portrayal deeply moving.

The Tragic Fate of Brad Renfro

Brad’s career ultimately declined irreversibly due to his numerous run-ins with the law. On December 22, 2005, in Los Angeles, the actor attempted to purchase drugs, not realizing he was dealing with an undercover cop. The following year, Brad Renfro was sentenced to three years of probation for heroin possession; he was naturally required to undergo another rehab treatment.

He then tried to break into music by forming the band Frodad and acted in what would be his last film before his death: “The Informers,” with Billy Bob Thornton, Winona Ryder, Mickey Rourke, and Kim Basinger. Unfortunately, he did not live to see the film completed. Brad Renfro was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment on January 15, 2008. He was only 25 years old.

The actor succumbed to a heroin overdose, following the tragic destiny of another drug-afflicted star, River Phoenix, who died in 1993 from an overdose of various drugs at the age of 23. His path can also be compared to that of Heath Ledger, who passed away a week after Brad, at 28, due to prescription drug intoxication.

Ironically, Renfro had been spotted for the casting of “The Client,” which launched his career, after participating in plays about drug prevention. “It was obvious to everyone that he was the most sweet and incredibly talented young actor to emerge in a long time. I deeply sympathize with the family for their tragic loss”, said Susan Sarandon, his co-star in “The Client.”

The young man, with his advantageous looks and visceral performances, could have become the new Brad Pitt. It’s no coincidence that Renfro played a younger version of Pitt in “Sleepers,” as the two artists shared many similarities, both in their acting styles and physical appearances. Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

“I first saw Brad Renfro while he was kicking a soccer ball. He was just a kid having fun, and that’s how I’ll always remember him. But he was much more than that. He was a true actor. When we worked together, he was adamant about being recognized as such. He was only 25, and it’s heartbreaking to think that we’ll never see all that he could have achieved”, said Ian McKellen, his co-star in “Apt Pupil,” on Digital Spy.
