Tonight on Netflix: ’90s Legal Thriller Starring Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones Is a Hit!

Directed by Joel Schumacher right before his first Batman film, the courtroom thriller “The Client” is one of the most-watched movies by Netflix users this week.

This week on Netflix, a mid-90s legal thriller directed by Joel Schumacher ranks ninth among the most-watched feature films on the popular platform by subscribers in the U.S.

What’s the Story About?

Featuring a strong and effective script, “The Client” tells the story of young Mark Sway, an 11-year-old boy who witnesses the suicide of Jerome Clifford, a corrupt lawyer who confides in him just before dying.

Now privy to a dark secret that the mafia had tried to bury, the boy is simultaneously threatened by the local mob boss and approached by the police, who want to extract all the information he knows. Mark then seeks help from attorney Regina Love, who agrees to assist him for a symbolic one dollar in a case that quickly gains media attention.

A Top-Tier Cast

The cast of this crime thriller, which enjoyed modest box office success in 1994, includes the superb Susan Sarandon, who was also Oscar-nominated for her portrayal of the lawyer, Tommy Lee Jones as District Attorney Roy Foltrigg, and young Brad Renfro in his film debut.

Interestingly, Macaulay Culkin, then at the height of his fame following the two “Home Alone” movies, was considered for the role of Mark, but the author of the original novel preferred a novice actor without a “Hollywood accent”.

A bit less famous than other films in his career, “The Client” was directed by Joel Schumacher following his acclaimed “Falling Down” (with Michael Douglas) and just before “Batman Forever”, which also featured Tommy Lee Jones in a very different role.
