Indiana Jones Star Regrets Comeback in Disappointing Fifth Film!

After portraying one of the most iconic characters in the Indiana Jones series, this legendary actor made his return in the fifth installment, “The Dial of Destiny.” He now shares his candid thoughts on the experience.

In June 2023, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” hit theaters and faced a colossal flop. James Mangold, taking over from Steven Spielberg as director, faced a harsh commercial failure, gathering only $383 million globally against a nearly $400 million budget.

The return of Harrison Ford as the aging adventurer did little to attract audiences, who largely ignored the hero’s swan song despite the return of beloved characters from the franchise, such as the memorable Sallah, portrayed by John Rhys-Davies, a fan favorite from the first and third films.

Without Sallah, It Just Doesn’t Work!

However, this comeback left a bitter taste for fans, as it didn’t live up to the hero’s legacy. This friendly Egyptian, jovial and boisterous, was a stalwart ally for Indy, saving him on numerous occasions. In “The Dial of Destiny,” his role was significantly reduced, and he was barely involved in Indy’s thrilling global adventures.

Even though he agreed to return knowing the circumstances, John Rhys-Davies couldn’t hide his disappointment. In an interview with My Pop Culture, the actor spoke frankly. “I must admit, I was disappointed because there just wasn’t enough substance to do anything significant with the character”, the 81-year-old artist conceded.

I was disappointed because there just wasn’t enough substance to do anything significant with the character.

“But that said, I had reservations about the script anyway… I shouldn’t say things like this because I should be very positive and say it was wonderful”, he concluded, clearly not wanting to seem ungrateful.

John Rhys-Davies’ frustration is understandable when recalling his statements from 10 years ago to Digital Spy. Back then, he explained his refusal to appear in “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and his reasons for it.

Understandable Bitterness

“I refused because it seemed like it would betray the audience’s expectations. Sallah is a popular character; there’s a nobility about him that we all love and admire”, the actor explained.

“Of course, I would love to do another one, he’s a wonderful character! But I would want him to do something meaningful. Perhaps the real tragedy of our time is that there’s no longer room in Western pop culture for a positive Arab character”, he emphasized.

Of course, I would love to do another one, he’s a wonderful character! But I would want him to do something meaningful.

“It’s just my perception of the audience, not a value judgement. Maybe that’s why this return might not happen, but if it did, it would be a tragedy for all of us”, John Rhys-Davies stated.

Deeply attached to the character, the celebrated actor envisioned a heroic destiny for Sallah as a protector of artifacts and antiquities: “I like to think he would have been someone like Khaled al-Asaad, that wonderful 80-year-old man who defended his museum in Palmyra and hid its major treasures. He refused to surrender them to Daesh and was beheaded in a public square. That’s probably how I would have seen Sallah”, he mentioned.

Unfortunately, James Mangold and the producers of Indy 5 did not heed the wishes of Sallah’s portrayer, which is truly regrettable. Given the monumental flop of “The Dial of Destiny” and Harrison Ford’s advanced age, a return of the Fedora-wearing adventurer seems utterly unlikely… Unless Disney, which holds the rights, decides on a reboot, much to the chagrin of many fans!
