Marvel’s Cult Superhero Denied Own Movie 6 Years Ago: The Inside Story!

X-23 was perfectly poised to follow in Wolverine’s footsteps, yet her standalone film was shelved before it could even take off. However, the character’s story is far from over…

Among the most promising new characters in the Marvel universe in recent years, Laura Kinney, better known as X-23, stood out. First introduced in the 2017 movie Logan, this young mutant portrayed by Dafne Keen captivated audiences with her intensity and ferocity, befitting Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) legacy. Despite seemingly perfect conditions for a solo venture, the project remained nothing more than an idea.

A genetic clone of Logan, Laura not only shares his powers but also his pent-up rage and ability to survive in a harsh world. Her portrayal significantly contributed to the emotional impact of Logan, to the extent that a film focusing on her emerged as a natural progression. At the time, director James Mangold publicly shared his desire to continue the narrative through her character, recognizing Dafne Keen’s exceptional potential.

The Sudden Freeze of Marvel Projects

However, the industry landscape soon complicated matters. From 2017 to 2019, Disney was acquiring 20th Century Fox, leading to a systematic pause on all Marvel projects from the studio.

X-23 was no exception. As a precaution, no concrete development was permitted during this period of uncertainty, leaving the project in limbo without a completed script.

A Director Moves On

James Mangold, who had only begun preliminary reflections on the story, eventually moved away from the film. Lacking momentum and a clear schedule, he shifted his focus to other film ventures, including Ford v Ferrari, before being tied up with major projects for Disney.

“I never had a script. I started working on a story, not as a sequel to a universe, but because I liked the character. I thought Dafne [Keen] was an incredibly dazzling actress,” he stated.

Once the acquisition was finalized, Mangold was tasked with projects far removed from the mutant universe, including Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and the Bob Dylan biopic featuring Timothée Chalamet, A Perfect Stranger. By this point, the idea of an X-23 film was no longer on his radar, and the character took a different path.

A Future Now in the Hands of Marvel Studios

Today, Laura Kinney is fully integrated into the timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine confirms her inclusion in the Avengers’ world and opens up new possibilities. Instead of a solo film, Disney seems to prefer utilizing the character collectively, particularly as part of a future X-Men team poised to play a crucial role against upcoming threats, including Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in the next Avengers installments.

What was meant to be a personal and character-focused passing of the torch has become a piece of a much larger puzzle. The X-23 film never materialized, but its heroine is far from vanishing.

While awaiting her return in new adventures, X-23 can be seen in Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine, both available for streaming on Disney+.
