He finally made his appearance on screen, and now Marvel seems to be “obsessed” with the character, at least according to Ryan Reynolds. Could this hero finally be getting his own movie? We hope so…
Warning! This article contains spoilers about “Deadpool & Wolverine” (2024).
Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit has quickly become a fan favorite in the recent Deadpool & Wolverine, so much so that Ryan Reynolds claims Marvel Studios has fallen in love with the star.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly on their Awardist podcast, Ryan Reynolds said that Channing Tatum’s performance as Gambit has made Marvel “obsessed” with the character. Although Reynolds is unsure if this will lead anywhere, Tatum has definitely proven that his take on the hero can work.
“Honestly, I don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors in Marvel’s accounting sessions, but I know they’re obsessed with him in this role,” Reynolds stated. “It’s kind of the same situation I went through. Once you show that it works well, that’s really what they need. Sometimes, they just need to see it in action.”
Ryan Reynolds also praised Channing Tatum’s unique approach to playing the character. “And Channing is so unique in the way he plays this character, but he’s also so physically beautiful, in the way he moves and speeds up his steps,” he added.
Could History Repeat Itself?
Before the release of Deadpool in 2016, Ryan Reynolds had long wanted to portray the character in a solo superhero film. The project seemed dead after the negative reactions to Green Lantern in 2011. However, leaked test footage of Deadpool in July 2014 sparked an overwhelmingly positive reaction, which convinced Fox to move forward.
And it seems likely that if Channing Tatum were to get his own project, Ryan Reynolds would be there to support him as he announced in a story published on Instagram (via Screen Rant): “When he makes a Gambit movie, I’ll return the favor. If he needs someone to carry sandbags, I’ll do it. If he needs a Deadpool, I can do that. Someone to hand out quarters of fresh oranges to the crew, no problem. I’ll do anything.”
It seems certain that discussions are ongoing with Kevin Feige, as Channing Tatum mentioned to Screen Rant, stating he would be “in any MCU thing,” not just a solo Gambit film.
Currently, there are no official projects or even rumors regarding a Gambit film led by Channing Tatum. However, the star expressed that he is ready and hopeful to reprise the character, and he would do whatever it takes to make it happen. Heads up to those interested…
In the meantime, Deadpool & Wolverine is available for streaming on Disney+.
