First announced five years ago, Marvel’s Wolverine, developed by the acclaimed studio Insomniac, is set to release on September 15. This superhero, portrayed by Australian actor Liam McIntyre, is featured in a new trailer.
In September 2025, during Sony Playstation’s State of Play, the Marvel superhero Wolverine made a comeback. It had been a while since we last heard about the game, originally announced in 2021 by the highly talented Insomniac Games.
They are the same studio behind the huge success of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PS5, as well as the critically acclaimed Spider-Man released in September 2018, a Sony exclusive; and the exceptional spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales, centered on the character introduced in the animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
This Stand Alone game also accompanied the launch of Sony’s new console; we’ve previously expressed our high regard for it. In 2023, Insomniac unleashed the impressive Spider-Man 2, which while not reinventing the wheel, did refine its already well-tested formula.
Acquired by Sony in 2019 for $200 million, Insomniac has quickly become a goldmine for the company, a key pillar with very powerful franchises under its belt. The Wolverine game is expected to further solidify this status on the upcoming September 15.
The studio has just released a new trailer titled “Ain’t no Hero,” which you can see here…
In the game, mutants live in hiding, terrified of those hunting them, while the rest of society remains oblivious to their existence. Among these hunters are the Reavers, a cybernetic militia of mercenaries tasked with capturing and delivering mutants to Bolivar Trask, a billionaire advocate of human supremacy.
The only ones potentially capable of protecting their own are the members of Team X, a mutant intervention unit in its darkest hours, which Logan rejoins after having left three years earlier.
Liam McIntyre, well known to fans from the series Spartacus, not only lends his voice but also his likeness to Wolverine, thanks to performance capture. “Fans know who Wolverine is and what he stands for. My job is to try to capture the essence of Wolverine, especially in the context of our story,” the actor explained. “People hurt him, strip him down, betray him. But he keeps fighting for those who can’t defend themselves.”
While Hugh Jackman has eternally defined the cinematic version of Wolverine, McIntyre’s choice for the video game counterpart is intriguing. It remains to be seen how it plays out with the controller in hand on September 15.
