Tonight, France 2 unveils its new show, Kaboul! But where was this series filmed? The answer might surprise you!
Starting tonight, France 2 introduces its latest series, created in partnership with the European Alliance and RAI Fiction, titled Kaboul. The series unfolds in the city at the time when Joe Biden, the then President of the United States, announced the withdrawal of American troops.
On August 15, 2021, the Taliban took over Kabul, plunging the nation into chaos. Developed by Olivier Demangel and Thomas Finkielkraut, the series aims to portray these events with utmost realism. But where was it actually filmed? You’ll be astonished by the answer!
Kaboul Was Filmed in Greece
Indeed, the production team headed to Greece, specifically Athens, to shoot the entire series, as filming in Kabul itself was naturally not an option. The series’ production designer spent about six months in Kabul to fully absorb the unique atmosphere of the city. Alongside his team, they meticulously recreated Kabul in a studio setting.
However, replicating Kabul in Greece was no small feat. It required careful integration of various filming locations. Moreover, the actors had to deal with challenging weather conditions. Darina Al Joundi, who plays Zahara, shared during a press conference for the project:
“There Was a Sandstorm”
“This was definitely one of the toughest projects to work on because everything was done in such a short time and it was really hot. There was even a sandstorm,” the actress revealed, recalling a specific scene: “There was a moment when I was locked in the trunk of a car. It must have been about 40 degrees Celsius inside. We were dressed as if it were winter, so it wasn’t easy. But it was the most beautiful shoot of my life!”
One thing is for sure, most of the sets were real, and some scenes were even filmed on an actual tarmac and inside a real airplane, giving viewers a deeply immersive experience of this tragic event. Tune in tonight at 21:10 on France 2 to catch the first three episodes of Kaboul.
