Every day, AlloCiné suggests a movie to watch on TV. Tonight: a mix of Lucy and Nikita by Luc Besson!
Five years following the box-office hit Lucy (5,187,049 admissions in the national box office), Luc Besson is back with a high-octane action thriller featuring an all-star cast, as usual.
Looking for another TV movie recommendation for tonight? We suggest this suspenseful film, one of the best from Alfred Hitchcock and James Stewart, rated 4 out of 5!
Released in cinemas in 2019, Anna tells the story of a 24-year-old woman with a hidden side. Is she just a doll vendor in Moscow’s markets? A top model strutting on the runways in Paris? A killer causing chaos in Milan? A corrupt cop? A double agent? Or simply a formidable chess player? The truth about Anna will only be revealed at the game’s end.
To bring this enigmatic young blonde to life on screen, Luc Besson did not choose Scarlett Johansson or Anne Parillaud, but rather Russian model and actress Sasha Luss. In addition to enchanting top fashion designers, she has also captured the heart of Leon’s creator as she previously starred in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
The cast includes well-known faces such as Helen Mirren (who is also the narrator of Barbie), Luke Evans (Fast and Furious), Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), and Lera Abova (One Piece).
Luc Besson Returns to His Nikita Roots
If you follow Luc Besson’s career, you might recognize similarities between Anna and two of his other films: Lucy and Nikita. Much like these thrillers, Anna centers around a strong, alluring woman (some might say, the “badass female” cliché) thrust into the secretive world of violent affairs.
From a wronged and desperate woman, Anna transforms into a killer and tormentor. Once again, the top model turns into a secret agent, embarking on intense missions to regain her freedom. This results in some hair-raising scenes (think of the moments when Sasha Luss confronts Russians in slick three-piece suits).
In short, it’s a true action-packed entertainment that checks all the boxes, even if it doesn’t reach the pinnacle of success, as evidenced by a modest media rating of 2.1 out of 5. Thankfully, the reviews are more complimentary.
Among them, one can read: “Luc Besson’s great comeback, surpassing the original codes of his early cinematic works”, “Genuine good Besson”, “This new Luc Besson film is simply superb”, and “Excellent film, in which Besson reconnects with his Nikita vein”. So, are you intrigued?
