Camille Cottin, currently starring in “Call My Agent!” on Netflix, was deeply moved by a dramedy to the point of tears at its premiere in Cannes.
Last May, Camille Cottin was in Cannes to showcase the comeback of the ASK agency. Indeed, as of this Thursday, September 10, “Call My Agent!” has returned to Netflix, not with a new season, but as a feature film. The cast includes actors who contributed to the series’ success, as well as guest stars like George Clooney. In an interview with Télé-Loisirs, Camille Cottin discussed this news, while sharing her thoughts on a dramedy directed by her half-sister, Avril Besson.
Camille Cottin Overwhelmed by Avril Besson’s Film
On July 29, a feature film titled “The Wonderful Mornings of Avril Besson” was released in theaters. It saw modest attendance (just 58,000 tickets sold) but received critical acclaim. The film introduces us to Charlie (India Hair), a young woman feeling lost after her grandmother’s passing. To move forward, she follows in her mother’s footsteps, taking along old vinyl records. She meets Titou (Eric Cantona), a wine merchant who knew her mother, and Marina (Raya Martigny), a young woman with whom she slowly falls in love.
During the film’s screening at the Cannes Film Festival, Camille Cottin was moved to tears, as she told reporters: “I’ve never cried so much, for so many reasons, at the movies.” Her emotional reaction is particularly poignant as the actress is not usually one to cry easily.
If “The Wonderful Mornings” touched her so deeply, it’s because it brought up her past, and that of Avril: “I was struck because we have a family story where my little sister lost her father when she was 14“, she continued, “I cried throughout because of the emotion, what it says, the themes of death, life, and love“.
“Very Limited Resources”
To make this blend of drama and romance, Avril Besson sacrificed both time and money, as revealed by Camille Cottin: “She spent seven years making her film with a budget of 400,000 euros, which, when you know film budgets, is really very limited.” With this modest sum, Avril Besson managed to achieve something crucial: conveying deep emotion.
However, Camille Cottin didn’t actually discover “The Wonderful Mornings” at Cannes. In fact, the star of “Call My Agent!” was already familiar with the project, as she shared with reporters: “I had read a version of the script a long time ago.” A re-discovery that still left her deeply moved.
